The sport of windsurfing

WINDSURFING HISTORY AND FACTS ABOUT THE SPORT

Windsurfing has also been called sailboarding or boardsailing and is a water sport that uses a board-and-sail device and combines elements of surfing and sailing. The sport was invented in the USA during the 1960s by Hoyle Schweitzer, a surfer, and Jim Drake, a sailor, both from California.

Windsurfing became popular in the 1970s. A windsurfer is essentially much like a surfboard to which a sail has been attached by a universal joint that allows full manual movement of the sail. By standing on the rudderless board and moving the sail the windsurfer uses both wave and wind to glide along the surface of the water. The sport spread rapidly from California, throughout the USA and North America, Australia and Europe.

By the end of the 1970s, Europeans and Australians- who seem to have an affinity for individual sports - had made windsurfing one of their most popular water sports. This popularity led to the development of new and better equipment. During the 1980's the sport continued to evolve and develop and became an Olympic sport in 1984 at the Las Angeles games

There is a lot of variation in modern sailboard design; the boards now generally range from eight to twelve ft (two to four m) and weigh between fifteen and forty lbs (seven to eighteen kg); some have reached speeds of over forty knots. Different types of modern windsurfing include racing, slalom, freestyle and wave sailing.

One of the 1st lessons a windsurfer learns is how to turn the board around. Probably the greatest humiliation for the windsurfing novice is to be seen stylishly sailing away from the shore into the sunset, only to discover that they cannot get back without the aid of a rescue boat.

Surfing is one of the oldest sports on earth. Many consider it an art form that is a blend of athletic ability and the comprehension of the power and beauty and power of nature. Surfing is also one of the few sports that creates its own culture and lifestyle.
