Track and field athletics dominated the ancient Greek athletic carnivals, and were also very popular in Rome, but this popularity waned during the Middle Ages. In England track and field was revived sporadically between the twelfth and nineteenth centuries. the 1st college track meet occurred in 1864 between Oxford and Cambridge universities.

Athletics is at the very heart of the spirit of the Olympic games, and is one of the most popular sports, comprising track and field events.

The running events include foot races of various distances, from 100 meters to the Marathon, which is 42 kilometers (about 26.2 miles). The Marathon race is legendary. The 1st Marathon of the modern Olympics was a forty kilometer (24.8-mile) race that was run as the finale to the 1896 Olympic Games. The current official Marathon distance of 26.2 miles was set during the 1908 Olympic Games in London, England.

  The distance of twenty-six miles from Windsor Castle to the stadium was established, but then an additional 385 yards was added to the course so the finish line could be at the royal viewing box in the stadium. This new distance of 26.2 miles was officially established by the Olympic Games in 1924.

The field events of the Athletics competition include long-jump, triple-jump, pole vault, discus throwing, shot put and high jump.

The 1st Women's Athletics events -- the 100, 800, 4 x100 meter relay, high jump and discus -- were included in the Olympic program at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, France.

Track and field athletics in the United States dates back to the 1860s. The Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America, the nations 1st national athletic group, held their first college races in 1873, and in 1888 the Amateur Athletic Union (which governed the sport for nearly 100 years) held its 1st championships.

The Athletics Congress now regulates the sport in the USA; the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) sanctions international competition. Track and field has been the centerpiece of the summer Olympic games since their revival in 1896. International professional running, initiated in the 1970s, has had limited success.

Speed is an integral part of nearly every every sport. Athletes from many sports football, baseball, softball, soccer, and tennis also attend track camps.

 

Orienteering is a worldwide sport in which participants use an accurate, detailed map and a compass to find checkpoints on a orienteering course. Orienteering can be enjoyed as a challenging walk in the woods or in a competition, where your race against time or others.

There are 309 division I and 218 division II NCAA schools that grant college cross country scholarships for men. That's a total of 6,668.01 cross country scholarships in the NCAA alone. For women's cross-country the total number of scholarships offered is 8,901.

You need to ease into your running program slowly. This program is designed to slowly build up your endurance and fitness and if you stick with it you will be able to run 5k after eight weeks.
