The History of College basketball

NCAA NAIA basketball

Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith while working for the YMCA training school in Springfield, Mass., in 1892. The game was originally played with between 7 to 9 players on each team, dribbling the ball was not allowed and players were off the court after 2 fouls.

The 1st intercollegiate basketball game was played on February 9, 1895, between Hamline College and the Minnesota School of Agriculture with Minnesota taking the game out nine to three. Basketball slowly developed over time and on Jan. 18, 1896, the 1st college basketball game was played with the with the five man format in Iowa City, Iowa. During the game, the University of Chicago defeated the University of Iowa by fifteen to twelve.

College basketball quickly grew and by the early twentieth century there were enough college teams that conferences began to form. In 1906, the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the U. S. (IAAUS) was formed to govern the rules of eligibility for college athletics. 4years later, the organization altered  its name to become the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

The first NCAA basketball  tournament was held in 1939 and included 8 teams that eventually grew to sixty five teams.

In 1938, the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association sponsored the 1st college basketball tournament called the "National Invitation Tournament that featured 6 teams and over time was expanded to over forty.

Both of these tournaments created venues where the best college teams in the nation could compete against each other for title of "National Champion." Until the late 1970s, the 2 tournaments were both accepted as being the best. In 1950, the City College of New York (CCNY) participated in and won both NCAA and NIT tournaments.

These tournaments were important to the sport of basketball because they allowed for emergence of dominant basketball colleges, whose success in the NIT or NCAA helped to lure top high school players to their schools. Some of the early power-house schools were the University of California Los Angeles, the University of Indiana, North Carolina, Duke and Kansas (whose basketball program was founded by Dr. James Naismith) still dominate college basketball today day. During the 1st forty years of their existence, the NCAA and NIT tournaments vied for dominance over the sport. By the late 1970s, the NCAA tournament had become the number one college basketball tournament. By the 1980s, intercollegiate basketball was one of the favorite sports in the nation. The rapid growth of the National Basketball Association (NBA) led to an increased interest in intercollegiate basketball game and many NBA stars were recruited from college.  The NBA recently set an age limit that stopped players from joining a professional basketball team as soon as they left high school.
