 how to get athletic scholarships

scholarship application information

Most college-bound student-athletes dream of getting an athletic scholarship. But many aren't sure how or where to start.

Here are some tips to help you realize your dreams:

  • Review your course work with your high school counselor to make sure you're taking courses that meet the requirements of the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and/or the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

  • Prepare a cover letter and sports résumé.

  • Make a 10-15 minute video that highlights your sports performance.

Obtain a letter of recommendation from your high school coach and your off-season coach.

  • Make a list of schools that you're interested in attending and get the names of the coach for each school. Send your cover letter to each coach, including your sports résumé, your video, your letters of recommendation from your coaches, and your season schedule.

Prepare for interviews. According to college recruiters, the best qualities to exhibit during an interview are confidence, respect, sincerity, and enthusiasm. Polish your interview skills by practicing with your coach, school counselor and your parents.

  • Prepare a list of questions to ask the recruiter during the interview. Some examples are:

    • Do I qualify both athletically and academically?

    • What position am I being considered for?

    • If I'm recruited, what type of scholarship will I be offered?

  • Don't forget to follow up! There are four times when a follow-up letter is effective: before your senior season, just after your senior season, just before announced signing dates, and late summer (in case scholarship offers have been withdrawn or declined).

  • There are three main associations: the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). All of these athletic associations impose certain eligibility rules and standards.

In their sport, athletes spend 15-20 hours practicing and training, and during the season, many sports require considerable travel time causing missed classes. Academically, students spend 12-15 hours in class each week. To succeed at college you need a time management game-plan.

The metabolic syndrome is a prevalent condition in North America, with nearly 25 percent of U.S. men and women having the syndrome along with roughly 15 percent of Canadian adults. An individual with the metabolic syndrome has three or more of the following factors: high blood pressure, high blood glucose, high plasma triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, and high waist circumference.

The Mountain West Conference is committed to excellence in college athletics, while at the same time promoting the academic ideals of its member schools.
