United States colleges welcome Australian student-athletes because they enrich and enhance the learning experience for their own students and at the same time assists students who might not have been able to afford a college education in the United States. As an international student you have a diverse background and perspective on life that is valued by United States universities.
Australian student-athletes make a significant contribution to college campus life, Consequently, American schools recruit and welcome international students.
If you are an outstanding athlete in your sport then you are seen as someone who will contribute not only on the athletic field but academically and socially as well. Over 600 colleges offer sports scholarships to athletes. Scholarships are offered in the following sports: Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Fencing, Field Hockey, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Rowing, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Track and Field, Volleyball, Water Polo,and Wrestling.
If you want to apply for an athletic scholarship in the United States then you simply have to follow the advice you will find on this website.
Before you apply for an athletic scholarship you should follow the steps listed below; you can, of course, apply to a college first and then take the necessary tests and register later, but your chances will be improved if you can tell the coach when you apply that you have met the required academic standards, are registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center and have passed the SAT test. This also indicates to the coach that you are committed to competing and studying in the USA.
1. You must have graduated from high school. There are minimum core requirements that you must fulfill. You will need to read the “NCAA Guide to International Academic Standards for Athletics Eligibility” Pay particular attention to the requirements for “Australian Athletes”.
2. You must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center formally called the NCAA Clearinghouse and forward all required documents to them.
3. Go to the NCAA website and check it out. Make sure you read and understand the “Guide for the college bound student athlete”.
4 You must register for and sit the SAT test. You can register online at the COLLEGE BOARD .
