sports HISTORY AND COLLEGE INFORMATION The student population of Virginia Intermont college has a wide range of backgrounds and interests. Students come from approximately thirty seven different states and twenty eight foreign countries.
At the College students learn while earning real world experience in a diverse array of degree programs from equine studies to photography and digital imaging to legal studies. Students enjoy a low student to faculty ratio of twelve to one. While the School values the worth and uniqueness of every student, it also commits itself to involving each student in its spirit of community. Virginia Intermont College has an atmosphere of intellectual freedom, fostering a climate for an open exchange of ideas. Critical thinking, creativity, written and oral communication and cultural appreciation are central to the educational experience. The School strives to create an atmosphere conducive to intellectual, aesthetic, spiritual and professional development. |

| The College is located in Bristol Virginia. It was founded in 1883 and has an enrolment of 1140. The School is a member institution of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The nickname of the sports teams is "cobras" and the school colors are black and Vegas gold. |

The Marathon is unique. It is a test of endurance and the human spirit. It lacks the glamour of the one hundred meter sprint but it inspires mere mortals like no other race can; running a Marathon is the ultimate test.
At the 1908 Olympic Games in London, the marathon distance was changed to 26 miles to cover the ground from Windsor Castle to White City stadium, with an additional 385 yards added on so the race could finish in front of royal family's viewing box.
