history AND FACTS ABOUT THE COLLEGE The University of Virginia's College at Wise was first called Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia. The Institution is the only 4 year, state sponsored college in far Southwest Virginia and the only branch of the University of Virginia.
the College is located on three hundred and sixty seven acres in Wise County, Virginia, the School is a wonderful example of the perseverance and determination of the Southwest Virginia area. Before the school was built, there were no public colleges in Virginia west of the city of Radford. Higher education was simply out of reach for most residents of Virginia's mountains. The institution 1st awarded Bachelor of Arts degrees in June 1970. Bachelor of Science degrees were 1st granted in 1973. Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees were 1st presented in 1996. About six thousand students have received baccalaureates in one or more of the School's academic disciplines. The University of Virginia's College at Wise is a public liberal arts college offering twenty seven majors, twenty seven minors, and twenty three teaching licensures. Degrees include Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
