Swimming Pool Safety Tips

Local community swimming pools will open this weekend. The women and men of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service are hoping that everyone has an enjoyable and safe Memorial Day Weekend. Last year in Montgomery County, fire and rescue personnel responded to over Sixty incidents involving injuries from falls, trouble breathing, drowning and other medical emergencies at residential and community swimming pools.

Drowning is the 2nd highest cause of death from unintentional injuries for people aged between the ages of Five and Twenty Four, according to the National Safety Council. Nationally, about Five Thousand people drown every year. For every drowning, it is believed that there are four  near-drownings that result in hospitalization. There were several drowning incidents in the metropolitan area last year.

Childhood drowning can happen in a matter of seconds and typically occur when a child is left alone or during a short lapse in supervision.

SWIMMING POOL SAFETY TIPS


We recommend the following helpful tips to make your swimming pool experience safe:

Follow posted rules. EG: – Danger. No Swimming. No Diving. No Running.

Swim only when rested. Never go swimming when you feel tired.

You should learn to swim and take lessons.

Learn CPR.

Play it safe around water. Stay out if there is no adult or lifeguard around.

Never eat candy or chew gum when you are swimming – There is always a possibility you could choke.

Don’t fool around. Pushing, running or shoving people can cause serious injuries to you or your friends.
