Stay safe when your swimming

Get out of water if you hear thunder or see lightening.

Stop, look and test before entering pool.

When you go to a new swimming venue – always check the surroundings and check with a lifeguard or adult.

Always raise your hands over your head when diving. (NEVER let your friends dare you into diving dangerously)

Install 4 sided isolation fencing at least five feet high, equipped with self-latching and self-closing gates, around home swimming pools.

Regularly check that the gate latches securely and that the spring mechanisms are working properly.

Don’t allow children to “play” in the pool area. Remove all toys, tricycles – anything a child might want to get from the vicinity.

Post CPR and the 911 emergency number in the pool area

Keep lifesaving equipment, such as a pole, life preserver and rope – in the pool area. Hang them from a fence or wall so people won’t trip on them.

Have a phone handy to the pool area. DO NOT answer the phone while your children are in the pool; use the phone only to call 911 should a problem occur.

Encourage your neighbors with pools to follow pool safety guidelines, including keeping their back gates and doors locked, and their pool gates secure.

The four major swimming strokes are Freestyle, Breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly. The breaststroke and butterfly are the most difficult to master compared to the backstroke and crawl.

Stroke development is the focus of most good swimming and diving camps. The aim is to improve the technique of campers in each of the four competitive strokes.

The backyard swimming pool is the ultimate centerpiece for family recreation, it is also the single most hazardous zone for toddlers and young children."

Over 12 states have ruled -- or are in the process of issuing rules -- that prohibit smoking in the presence of foster children, and 2 states and a number of cities have laws that ban smoking in cars when any children are present.
