ANABOLIC STEROID CONTROL ACT

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES MOVES TO CONTROL THE SALE OF ANABOLIC STEROID PRECURSORS

United States Senate now urged to pass similar legislation to severely limit the availability of dangerous drugs.

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) today commended the United States House of Representatives for passing the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2004 and urged senators to promptly support and adopt similar legislation.

HR 3866 would prohibit over-the-counter sales of anabolic steroid precursors by requiring a that a person have a  prescription from a physician. Final passage would significantly limit access to substances such as androstenedione, commonly known as “andro,” and its derivatives. These substances metabolize into anabolic steroids once ingested into the body. The legislation effectively reclassifies these products as controlled substances. They are currently considered supplements. Under federal law, controlled substances are the most highly regulated drugs in the USA.

"This potentially closes a very large loophole that exists under current law, thereby protecting the health of professional elite athletes as well as recreational and student athletes, said Gary Wadler, M.D., an ACSM sports medicine doctor and member of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and leading international authority on doping in sports.

ACSM has a long history of supporting a ban on performance enhancing substances, including anabolic steroids and their precursors, because of their adverse health effects. The College strongly supports all efforts to protect the health of athletes by limiting access to these dangerous substances and will now turn attention to the version of this legislation currently under consideration by the Senate, Senate Bill 2195.

ACSM will also continue to be an active member of the Coalition for Anabolic Steroid Precursor and Ephedra Regulation (CASPER).

The American College of Sports Medicine is the biggest sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world. In 2004, ACSM celebrates fifty years of leadership and scientific contribution.

The College was founded in 1954 by a small but dedicated group of eleven professionals interested in the study of physical activity and sports. Today, more than twenty-thousand International, National, and Regional members carry on the Founders’ goals of advancing and integrating scientific research to provide practical and educational applications of exercise science and sports medicine.

Steroid Prevention Program

Recent studies suggest that steroid abuse among teenagers is on the rise. The study indicates that students at the 8th grade level (and even younger) are beginning to experiment with steroids with little understanding of their potential deadly side effects.
