Don Catlin, the laboratory's director, said that the detection of EPO and HGH abuse is quite difficult because they appear only in very very small quantities in body fluids. EPO increases oxygen uptake to the working muscles, and HGH improves muscle growth.

When extracting EPO from urine, Catlin says, "the less there is of it, the harder it is to extract with good recovery."

He also says, "A lot of the drugs we are dealing with have molecular weights of 300. EPO has a molecular weight of 30,000 to 35,000, which is too big for our mass spectrometers to work on."

In response, the WADA has included methods such as gene and blood doping to its list of banned or prohibited substances. New testing methods are being developed all the time to increase detection of "gene" manipulation and blood tests, rather than urine testing, is already on its way to becoming the standard for detecting prohibited drug users.
