Colorado Rockies Athletic Trainers Honored as Training Staff of the Year

Head athletic trainer Thomas Probst and assistant athletic trainer Keith Dugger of the Colorado Rockies have been voted Major League Training Staff of the Year by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS). Dugger and Probst were awarded this recognition in December during the Major League Baseball winter meetings in New Orleans.

Probst is a graduate from Minnesota SU and began his career as an athletic trainer with the Montreal Expos Minor League system before joining the Rockies in 1993. He served as the Rockies’ assistant athletic trainer until 1998 after which he was promoted to head athletic trainer. During his career he earned a 2nd bachelor’s degree in physical therapy at Florida International University and has served as the PBATS’ National League Head Athletic Trainer Representative for the past two years.

Keith Dugger has completed nine seasons in the Minor League, first with the San Diego Padres farm system, then with Class A affiliates in Washington D.C. from 1990-91 and in Charleston, SC in 1992.

He joined the Rockies in 1993 and earned the award for the Pacific Coast League’s “Athletic Trainer of the Year” in 1997 before moving to the Major League in 1998.

“I am so honored to receive this award,” said Tom Probst. “It is a great feeling to be rewarded for doing something you love.”

Assistant athletic trainer Keith Dugger agrees. “I’m thrilled to get this award. I feel so lucky to be able to do something I enjoy every day, and to be honored for all of our hard work feels great.”

PBATS is a professional organization whose mission is to serve as an educational resource for the Major League and Minor League Baseball athletic trainers. PBATS serves its members by providing continued education for athletic trainers as it relates to the profession. PBATS also helps to improve each member’s understanding of sports medicine and to promote the health of his constituency, professional baseball players.

Some styles of martial arts may be considered as much of a contact sport as football, for example, the training is very different. Unlike other sports where weightlifting to build muscle mass and strength is very important, success in martial arts is built on strategy, technique, mental discipline, endurance and flexibility.

After school and other structured youth training programs quite often lack the amounts of physical activity needed by young people, even those offered at health and fitness facilities.
