KASEY KAHNE WINS NASCAR RACE IN SPITE OF RAIN

BILL LESTER BECOMES FIRST BLACK DRIVER TO START AND FINISH

Bill Lester became the 1ST black driver to start and finish a race in Nascar's top series since Willy T. Ribbs won 20 years ago. He started nineteenth in his Dodge and finished 38th in the 43-car field.

Bill Lester said he was proud of his accomplishment, but a little embarrassed by all the attention he was getting.

"I'm looking forward to when it's about racing instead of race," he said.

The forty-five-year-old Lester, a regular driver in NASCAR's Craftsman Truck Series since 2002, accomplished one of his main goals, avoiding a crash and  being able to race to the end of the 500-mile race, postponed on Sunday because of heavy rain.

The top Cup rookie in 2004, Kahne dropped down the rankings last year. But he has started this season with 4 strong performances, that include an 11th-place run at Daytona and 2 fourth-place finishes before taking out the 2nd win of his career.

Kasey Kahne won the race and became the 1st driver to do a lap on  Atlanta's victory lane in a Dodge in twenty-nine years. Kahne, who started from the pole position, took the lead eighty laps from the finish and overcame a late challenge.

Kahne, driving for Evernham Motor sports, is in his 3rd Nextel Cup season. But he made a veteran call on a day when many drivers had handling problems on the track's long, high banks. He proposed a chassis adjustment halfway through the race. Though he lost sight of the leaders with a longer pit stop, Kahne eventually returned to the lead and managed to hold off Mark Martin's charge twelve laps from the finish.
