INJURY SLOWS BARRY BONDS ATTEMPT TO BEAT BABE RUTH'S RECORD

The Giants got some terrific news about Barry Bonds' left elbow last Sunday: An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan has shown nothing more than inflammation, and he reported to work feeling a lot better.

"The swelling around the elbow has almost completely disappeared," head trainer Stan Conte said. "Barry had full motion of his arm and no pain. That's all very, very positive. I really didn't expect it to turn around that quickly."

Bonds had the magnetic resonance imaging scan late Saturday afternoon, after he was taken out of the lineup before the Giants played the Chicago White Sox. He was also examined by team orthopedist Doctor Ken Akizuki and Doctor Lewis Yocum. Bonds had follow-up examinations on Sunday that went well and he should resume baseball training today.

7 home runs short of passing Babe Ruth, this should be a great time for Barry Bonds.

Not so, he says.

"My life is in shambles. It is all just crazy," Bonds said on Monday in an interview with The Associated Press. "It couldn't get any crazier. I'm just trying to stay sane."

Then, clearly joking, he went for shock value:

"Go to the Empire State Building and jump off, commit suicide and people can say, 'Barry Bonds is finally dead.' Except for in San Francisco," he said. "I'll leave something for them."

Despite those pronouncements, Bonds, forty-one, has been upbeat and approachable -- by his standards -- this spring despite the recent release of "Game of Shadows," the book detailing his alleged longtime regimen for taking performance-enhancing drugs.

He appears unfazed at the plate. He's ten for sixteen with 4 homers in exhibition play despite being held out of the lineup for the 3rd consecutive day because of a tender left elbow.

Bonds played in just 14 games last season, all in September, following three operations on his troublesome right knee.

"It's fine," Bonds said. "The knee feels good. I have just got to concentrate on getting my strength back. My legs are fine. I just took a couple weeks off from training."

The greatest athletes of all time.
