Sanya Richards

On running so fast - breaking her US junior record - in the 1st round of the women's 400m: "I'm trying to take it 1 round at a time. I think it's going to be great. It's a good changing of the guard with all the college athletes doing well.

"I accomplished everything I wanted to in college. I'd recommend that everyone experience college. I think turning professional was the best decision for me. It worked perfectly for me."

Toby Stevenson

"All my celebrating is really just a relaxation technique.

"The men's pole vault has improved by leaps and bounds this year.

"There's heaps of outside pressure. In the pole vault, anything can happen at any time.

Shalane Flanagan

On the women's 5,000m final: "It was an amazing race. To be honest with you, I was pretty negative during the race. I was hoping that I wouldn't be leading throughout, but I have been training so hard and they were racing so slowly. I put it in there, ground it out."

On her mother being a competitive athlete: "Recently, we've been talking about this. It's not so much a runner-runner relationship, but a mother-daughter relationship when we talk. I need to keep a balanced lifestyle."

Grace Upshaw

On her goals for the women's long jump final: "Obviously, I'm looking to be in the top 3. It felt good to get the 1st jump out of the way last night. I've always been a really consistent jumper. The better I'm getting, the more consistent I'm jumping. My goal is to jump the best that I can on Thursday. I know that if I jump well, everything will be good."

On her father, Monte, being the former high school record holder in the long jump (breaking Jesse Owens' record in 1954 as a high school senior): "Long jumping is in my blood. It's everywhere; I can't get away from it."
