The game of softball

SHORT HISTORY AND THE RULES OF SOFTBALL

The formation of the ASA gave softball the impetuous and foundation it needed to develop and grow throughout the United States. under the network of associations proposed by Fischer and Pauley.

Fischer and Pauley visited many of the states and invited teams to participate in the competition. Fischer and his sports promotion director, Harry Wilson, sold the Century of Progress Exposition on the idea of sponsoring the tournament and providing a field inside the Fair Grounds. The American's sports pages promoted the tournament daily and Chicago businessmen raised $500 to finance the event.

In 1935, the Playground Association Softball Guide, wrote: "the years of persistent effort, constant promotion and unchanging faith of believers in softball proved to have not been in vain, for in 1934 softball came into its own.

The International Softball World Championships in nineteen sixty-five developed women's softball by making it an international game, a step towards the Pan-American Games and the Olympics. 11 years later, women softball players were given the closest equivalent to Major League Baseball with the 1976 formation of the International Women's Professional Softball League. Player contracts ranged from $1,000 to $3,000 per year, but the league disbanded in 1980 because of financial problems.

The popularity of women's fastpitch softball has grown steadily since the professional league's end in 1980. In fact, once again, there is another professional fastpitch league called the NPF (National Pro Fastpitch League). The Amateur Softball Association reports that it "annually registers over 260,000 teams that combined form a membership of more than 4.5 million" (About the ASA).

These numbers do not all apply to fastpitch, yet it is consistently growing along with slowpitch. All over America hundreds of leagues and thousands of players enthusiastically accepted this major team game and Softball became one of America's most loved sports.

BASIC RULES OF THE GAME OF SOFTBALL

  • After a fielder catches a batter out, base runners may still attempt to get to the next base.

  • If a baserunner leaves her base before a ball that is hit in the air is caught, the baserunner will be out if the catching fielder or another fielder from a pass can get to that base before the baserunner can get back.

  • The batter may run past first base, but can be tagged out with the ball if they run or slide past second or third base.

  • A baserunner can attempt to run on at any the ball is in play even if the ball was not hit by the batter

  • Pitchers must have at least one foot on the ground when pitching

  • Substituted players may re-enter the game but reserves can be called on to substitute only one player.

  • If a batter hits a foul ball, it counts as a strike against her unless she already has two strikes.

Softball Life by Jacqulyn Torrez I threw the ball all the way from third base to first base. “BAM!” I got the out. The game was over. “Yes you did it!” That was what the team said. But I said in reply, “No we did it!” We had won the game with a score of 17 to 10. We have never seen our coach so happy--that is until we won state.
