Soccer in the usa

have the people accepted the world game

The organic growth of soccer after World War I, particularly visible in the expanding working-class neighborhoods of European (not just British) immigrants and in the factories and mills (e.g. Bethlehem Steel, Pennsylvania) further marginalized soccer from the American mainstream. Soccer in the United States has been battling this image of being an immigrant sport ever since.

In my past seminars on the history, politics, and cultures of world soccer at Tufts University, students read extensively and had lively discussions on the question of soccer's ambiguous historical legacy in the USA.. We all came to a similar conclusion: while the American public's view of soccer has waxed and waned over time, today it seems to be changing for the better.

My own skepticism of American fans received a near-fatal blow recently when my wife, 2 friends, and I sat in the cheap seats at Foxboro stadium at a Revolution vs. Rapids match.

I listened in awe as a 13 year-old expert sitting behind me explained the differences between zonal and man-to-man marking to her peers. She painstakingly pointed out each New England player's technical abilities and shortcomings, and sharply criticized the home team's poor execution of an offside trap. Impressive, inspiring stuff!

Cultural factors help us shed more light on the so-called "failure" of soccer in the United states. Americans embraced "indigenized" sports more readily than "pure" imports. Basketball came from netball-type games, baseball from rounders, and gridiron football from rugby. But soccer was never indigenized. This peculiar process, one that Andrei Marskovits has called "The Other American Exceptionalism," has contributed to the exclusion of soccer from mainstream American high performance sports.

While no one should expect older white (male) Americans and die-hard NFL fans to suddenly fall in love with "the world game," it is clear that grassroots support, an improving MLS, the trailblazing women's game, and stable corporate interest are feeding a Wonderful Awakening. Having enjoyed the game since the latter half of the 19th century, the American public-defined broadly and inclusively-is once again seeking solace in the unpredictable spectacle that unfolds everywhere soccer is performed.
