Information about a new brand of sports shoe

On long runs the buddies would talk about starting a company that sells light-weight, affordable running shoes.

Earlier this year Mike St. Laurent and Arlon Chaffee did, founding Loco Sports Inc. based in Newmarket.

As of last month the company had sold about 700 pair since its official product launching at the Boston Marathon. Many of the sales were made out of a tent at races.

More recently, stores including Red’s Shoe Barn in Dover have picked up their shoes. They are also available at the company Web site — www.locorunning.com

The company’s co-founders say their shoes meet serious runners’ varying needs, from the extremely light-weight racing model, the Bandito, to the training models: the Perfecto, Expresso, and Mojo.

The price range, from least to most expensive, is $59 to $85, Chaffee said.

"Each of our shoe models is created for fit, function and performance, without sacrificing an attractive look," stated St. Laurent. "We chose a design and appearance that the runner will love, without driving up the price."

St. Laurent is a veteran of shoe development. An original employee at Nike in Exeter, he later worked for other major running shoe manufacturers.

For now, St. Laurent and Chaffee are the company’s only employees. The shoes are made in China. St. Laurent has a home office.

How he ended up in Newmarket is all tied to running, he said.

While visiting a friend here, another runner, St. Laurent noticed a home for sale. He was out on a run when he noticed it.

Many runners, he said, like to live in places where they can step out their door and go for a run. This describes Newmarket, he said.

Chaffee is also a resident of Newmarket where, over the years, he has volunteered for various committees including the School District’s Health and Benefits Study Committee and the Newmarket Community Development Corporation.

Loco’s target market is runners, like Chaffee and St. Laurent, who log at least 20 miles a week and participate in 10 or more competitive races a year, said Chaffee, whose day job is recruiting corporate executives.

"For runners, by runners," is the company motto.

Chaffee, 46, picked up the sport in his 30s, after his wife introduced him to it; St. Laurent, 48, was a competitive runner going back to high school and college.

The popularity of running remains strong.

In fact, St. Laurent said, "I think running is bigger than ever."
