Study Shows Pre-teens Who
Lift Weights
Increase Strength But Do Not Shed Extra Pounds
Research
team finds that low-volume weight training
does not increase energy expenditure.
Can an overweight girl lose her excess pounds with a
weight-lifting program alone? Probably not, the results of a recent study
show. Girls who participate in resistance training at school may get
stronger, but they may not lose weight as a result. A whopping 22 percent of
children and adolescents in the United States are overweight, and reduced
energy expenditure is known to be one possible cause of obesity.
A research team, led by Margarita Treuth of Baylor College
of Medicine in Houston, Texas, set out to test the theory that increasing an
individual's energy expenditure would push metabolism to a rate that might
contribute to weight loss. The results were published in the July 1998 issue
of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, the official journal of the
American College of Sports Medicine.
The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of a
school-based, low-volume strength training program on strength, physical
fitness, and energy expenditure in overweight young girls. Twelve healthy
overweight girls between the ages of seven and ten years were recruited for
the project, which was conducted at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
The project included measurement of their resting metabolic rate and a
treadmill and muscle strength test to determine the baseline fitness of each
individual.

The group participated in their physical education
classes at school, and exercised three times a week under study conditions
for five months with a low volume strength training protocol.
At the end of the school year, they returned to the study
center for a final assessment, along with a control group that had not
exercised outside school. The researchers measured body composition, oxygen
uptake and other respiratory rates to ascertain whether metabolism had
changed as a result of exercise.
They found that although strength parameters increased by
approximately 20 percent, there was no concomitant increase in aerobic
fitness parameters. After all training and measurements, the research team
was unable to find any significant change in metabolic parameters that would
indicate a higher metabolic rate in the group of girls who received the
strength training.

Based on their measurements in both the control group and
the exercise group, Treuth and her associates concluded that such a strength
training program will likely increase strength in the participants, but will
not significantly increase energy expenditure.>
However, the strength training program used in this study
effectively increased muscle strength in the overweight children. The
methods they used did not provide evidence that metabolism was altered by
the exercise program, but a more intensive resistance exercise program or
one that combines aerobic exercise with strength training may increase
metabolism and have a benefit on body composition in obese children. Treuth
and her associates further concluded that future research should focus on
aerobic exercise combined with strength training, which would be more likely
to improve overall metabolism in obese children.

Many believe that
freckles just appear in children naturally. But in fact, Voorhees says,
the majority of freckles, if not all, are sure
signs of sun damage. "When
you see that occurring in a child, of course, it's too late for those
spots, but certainly that person needs tremendous sun protection."
