Since the announcement of its nicotine patch program less than 2 weeks ago, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) has distributed 24,922 patch kits to cigarette smokers in all 5 boroughs,

with most recipients coming from Brooklyn (29%) and Queens (25.5%), far outpacing Manhattan and the Bronx (19% and 14.5% respectively). Staten Island, which has the highest rate of smokers in the city, accounts for 12% of recipients.

While heavy smokers in New York City are mostly male, female patch recipients outnumber males by about five to four. People in several demographic groups have also called at lower levels. For instance, Asian/Pacific Islanders – who comprise almost ten% of the City’s heavy smokers – have made only 2% of patch requests.
