pre-participation physical examinations
The benefits of sports participation are clear . . .they inspire healthy
lifestyles and build character and leadership abilities. A pre-participation
physical exam (PPE) is an important tool to ensure the safe participation of
student-athletes. The primary purpose of the PPE is not to disqualify a
student from competition, but to help maintain the health and safety of the
student-athlete in training and competition.
The PPE should include a complete medical history and a physical exam.
The medical history should include a review of past injuries, illnesses and
surgeries, medication usage, drug allergies, asthma and seasonal allergies.
The physical exam should include a check of height, weight, vision, heart
rate and blood pressure. The extent of the examination of the head, ears,
nose, throat, lungs, cardiovascular system, abdomen and musculoskeletal
systems varies, depending on the sport.

If a medical condition is identified during the PPE, the medical
practitioner (physician, nurse, or physician’s assistant) must determine if
the condition places the student-athlete at an increased risk for injury. If
the practitioner determines that the condition does place the student at an
increased risk, participation in the sport may be limited and/or denied. If
participation is denied, recommendations for correction prior to
participation should be communicated and a follow-up exam should be
scheduled. If an illness or condition is resolved prior to the sport season,
the student-athlete is normally allowed to participate.
Good nutrition is an
integral part of athletic performance. More and more high school athletes
are educating themselves on the impact of diet on athletic performance. |

Without proper treatment or acknowledgement,
teenage depression can become a
very serious condition. For many teens, depression can have a negative
effect on their school performance and social activities.
The low carbohydrate diet is not
normally recommended for athletes or active people because
low carbohydrate intake can deprive the body of extra energy or make people
too tired to exercise.
