IF YOU WANT TO PLAY COLLEGE SPORT THEN YOU NEED TO STAY IN SHAPE DURING THE OFF SEASON

Don't just stop training when your season is over. The game pressure is over until next year! It's good to take a break from your sport, but there is a danger in letting your break last a little too long. In the off-season, it's important for you to maintain an effective training plan designed to keep you in shape.
Former New York Yankee pitcher Whitey Ford jokes, "the way to make coaches think you're in shape for spring training is to arrive at camp with a tan."

Guess what? As soon as you begin doing your sprints or running your laps (and even before that if you've gained 20 pounds) everyone will know what you haven't been doing during the off-season. The fact of the matter is that what you do or don't do in the off-season will affect your performance in the next season.

Regardless of the sport you play, your coach probably subscribes to the theory that success is the result of hard work. Your coach will make sure you're physically fit and mentally prepared during the pre-season and competition. It's their responsibility to make sure you're ready to play. The responsibility of staying in shape during your off-season falls to you.

Your coaches and trainers should provide you with a plan for training in the off- season customized for your particular sport. Make sure that all training plans have the approval of your family physician. Different sports require different skills, levels of flexibility and endurance; therefore, each sport will have a different training regimen.

Off-season training may not require quite the level of training as during your pre-season and competition, but it will require a certain level of commitment on your part. Typically, off-season training and duration can be reduced with little effect on overall endurance. However, when you train, you should train at the same intensity level as you did during the season. The quickest way to lose endurance is to reduce training intensity.

The off-season is probably the best time to work on improving your strength and power. Keep in mind that there is no substitute for hard work, so don't be tempted to experiment with performance enhancing drugs. Anabolic steroids have received a lot of media attention over the past decade, and for good reason. They can increase your body size and improve your strength, but at a tremendous cost. Anabolic steroids are not only illegal but are also unsafe for your health.

According to Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, "the will to win is important, but the will to prepare is vital." The good news is it's easier to stay in shape than it is to get in shape. So don't become too much of a couch potato in your off-season and good luck when you show up for pre-season workouts running circles around your teammates.
