Not all athletic scholarships are full ride like basketball and football so called "head count" sports; most are classed as "equivalency" sports.

Now volleyball is a little bit different. Men's volleyball is classified as an equivalency sport but women's volleyball is classified as a head count sport.

The NAIA also allows 12 scholarships per school.

The NJCAA allows 14 scholarships per school. Volleyball is a women's only sport at JUCO level.

The first NCAA women's volleyball championship took place in 1981 for divisions I, II and III. Volleyball was the third sport in which championships were held. The first two were cross-country and field hockey.

The first NCAA men's volleyball championship took place in 1970. UCLA won the first three championships.

If you are serious about applying for a scholarship then you should consider attending a volleyball camp. This will help refine your exposure and technique and you will learn advanced tactical aspects of the game.

 

You must must also register and be certified by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. Take a look at the NCAA Academic Eligibility section to see what initial-eligibility standards you need to reach.

While basketball was creating excitement in Springfield, Mass., another YMCA instructor, William Morgan, thought the game was "too strenuous for sedate businessmen." He took parts of basketball, tennis and handball into a new game he called "Mintonette"  now known as volleyball.

Junior College Volleyball Scholarships.

The game of volleyball was formulated in 1895 by William Morgan at the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) in Holyoke, Mass., where he worked as Director of Physical Education.
