College gymnastics Recruiting and financial aid

Learn how to get in touch with college gym coaches and apply for a gymnastics scholarship. The resources and information on this website will be guide you through the process.

Gymnastic scholarships are classed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as "equivalency" scholarships and not "full ride" as is the case with some other sports like basketball and football which are sometimes called "head count" sports.

The NCAA allows each division I gymnastics program 12 scholarships for women and 6.3 for men. In division II the ratio is 6 scholarships for women and 5.4 for men.

The NAIA sponsored a women's gymnastics championship between 1981 and 1988. The sport was subsequently discontinued.

For gymnasts and parents who are interested in applying for college gymnastics scholarships then attending a gymnastics camp at some of the colleges that the athlete is interested in attending is a wonderful idea. This gives the gymnast the opportunity to see if the campus, facilities and coaches are a good fit for the gymnast.

One of the first things you need to do if you want to be in line for a college gymnastics scholarship is to register and be certified by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. Visit the NCAA Academic Eligibility section of this website to guage what initial-eligibility standards you need to have.

Today, gymnastics is quite often called the ultimate combination of art and sport, but the idea is really not new. Homer, Plato and Aristotle strongly advocated the strengthening qualities of gymnastics.
