The National Collegiate Athletic association, ( NCAA ), allows each Division I college fencing program 5 scholarships for women and 4.5 for men. In division II the ratio is 4.5 scholarships for women and also 4.5 for men.

Fencing was included NCAA championship sport in 1941. As well as individual championships for men in epee, foils and sabre, there were also team weapons championships.

Since 1990, there has been a single college fencing championship meet, with the NCAA team championship based on combined women's and men's events. Women's epee was included in the championship in 1995 and the women's saber was also included in the championship in 2000.

One of the first things you need to do if you want to be in line for a college fencing scholarship is to register and be certified by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. The United States Fencing Association (USFA) is the recognized National governing body for the sport of fencing in the USA. The association was founded in 1891 as the Amateur Fencers League of America (AFLA) by a group of New York fencers that sought independence from the Amateur Athletic Union.

The Patriot League first started as a distinguished Division I-AA (now known as the Football Championship Subdivision) football conference in 1986.
