College rowing scholarships are only offered to women

Women's rowing is a college sport that requires a large team, this means that the sport can command up to twenty athletic scholarships per school. this is the largest number of scholarships available for any women's sport in the NCAA.

Not all college sports scholarships are full ride like basketball and football, so called "head count sports"; most college sports are classified as "equivalency sports", like college rowing. Put simply this means that coaches can "share" their allocation between a larger number of rowers.

There are 84 division I and 15 division II colleges that offer rowing scholarships.

If you are serious about trying out for college crew then you should consider attending a college rowing camp. Most top universities and colleges organize their own camps as well over the summer. These rowing camps will provide you with very specific additional training and development and also get you noticed by the college coaches.

One of the first things you need to do if you want to be in line for a college rowing scholarship is to register and be certified by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. You need to Visit the NCAA Academic Eligibility section of this website to gauge what initial-eligibility standards you need to have.

Boat clubs were formed in the USA in the 1800's. Philadelphia's Schuylkill Navy, started in 1858 and was the first rowing association and the first amateur sports organization. Amateur and collegiate oarsmen started the National Association for Amateur Oarsmen (NAAO) in 1872.

It is interesting to note that women were left out of these clubs, even though they rowed in amateur and collegiate races. In the early 1960's, the National Women's Rowing Association was formed. Finally, in 1982, the National Association for Amateur Oarsmen and the National Women's Rowing Association joined to become the coed United States Rowing Association (USRA).

It does seem ironic that women were not allowed to join these clubs yet today rowing is a sanctioned NCAA sport for women only.

If you enjoy rowing, canoeing, or kayaking, then the information in this section should be most helpful for improving your rowing-paddling performance and reducing your risk of muscle overuse-imbalance injuries.

College athletes make up the bulk of the American athletes in Olympic sports such as track and field, wrestling, gymnastics, volleyball and swimming. These very same athletes, men as well as women, find themselves fighting for the very existence of their sports at college level back home in the USA.

The NCAA eligibility Center is an agency of the National Collegiate Athletic Association that certifies the initial eligibility of all perspective student-athletes who register to compete as a freshman athlete at NCAA Division I and II member institutions.
