NATIONAL COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC
ASSOCIATION ATHLETIC CONFERENCES
western athletic CONFERENCE
The Western Athletic Conference or WAC
as it is commonly known is the sixth oldest among the country’s
eleven Football Bowl Subdivision NCAA conferences. The conference covers a large
geographical area of the USA and has member institutions situated in
Hawaii, California, Idaho, Louisiana,
New Mexico, Nevada and Utah.
The WAC held it's first championship in November 1962, when
Arizona won the men’s cross country title and New Mexico took out the first football title. Arizona
later finished 2nd in the National Collegiate Athletic Association College World
Series and, less than three years later, Arizona State took the league’s
first NCAA title when the Sun Devils won the College World Series trophy.
Currently the WAC has team and individual champions in
nineteen sports – eleven women’s and eight men’s. Championship sports
for men are: tennis, baseball, football, basketball, cross country, golf, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field.
