ATLANTIC HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

 

The Atlantic Hockey Association was founded on June 30, 2003, by 9 charter member institutions.
The Atlantic Hockey association became the sixth Division-I men’s ice hockey conference and came into being because the founding members - Holy Cross, Mercyhurst, American International, Bentley, Canisius, Connecticut, Sacred Heart, Quinnipiac and the United States Military Academy (Army) - wanted a conference that addressed their specific hockey needs.

Member colleges of Atlantic Hockey had a total of 295 student-athletes who have received All-Academic honors by the Atlantic Hockey Association. Last year, lover 100 student-athletes achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher during both the Fall and Spring semester and subsequently earned all Academic honors. One hundred and six student-athletes were admitted to the 2004-05 All-Academic squad with 18 from Sacred Heart as the top achieving college. A total of Eighty eight student athletes were named to the 2003-04 Atlantic Hockey All-Academic squad because of their academic results.

    At the present time the Atlantic Hockey Conference covers a total of five states, reaching from  the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. Member colleges are reside in  Connecticut (University of Connecticut, Sacred Heart), New York (Army, Canisius, RIT), Massachusetts (American International, Bentley, Holy Cross), and Pennsylvania (Mercyhurst).

The game is very popular in Canada and in some regions of the USA. Namely the Northeast, Alaska and the Northern Midwest. There are a total of sixty four members in the International Ice Hockey Federation.
