history and information

The College was established in 1828 by pioneer Methodists, the school is the oldest college in Illinois, and the oldest in the country with continuous ties to the United Methodist Church.
 

  
The College was 1st called "Lebanon Seminary," and the institution opened in 2 rented sheds for Seventy Two students. In 1830. Bishop William McKendree who was the 1st United States born bishop of the Methodist church, allowed the Board of Trustees to change the institution's name to McKendree College. Later Bishop McKendree deeded Four hundred and eighty acres of very fertile land in Shiloh Valley to help support the College.
Reverend Peter Akers, in 1833, was the 1st president of the newly named school. He was 3 times president of McKendree College and was awarded its 1st degree, an honorary Doctorate of Divinity.  In 1835, the university was granted one of the 1st charters given to independent church colleges by the Illinois legislature. The college still operates under the provisions of a 2nd, more liberal charter granted in 1839.
