It is much easier psychologically to have smaller goals and they are easier to achieve so you get the satisfaction of reaching your goal and congratulating yourself.

2nd, exercise. This really is the key. you need to burn calories. This will not only help you lose weight but will improve other areas of your life. By following a planned exercise strategy, you will find that you have more energy, are more attentive, less tired and you will feel better about yourself. Keep detailed notes to track your progress over time. This way you can slowly increase your exercise intensity and length of your workouts gradually over time. Don't try to do too much at the start, it needs to be gradual, start with the basics, cycling, running, light weight training.

Don't restrict yourself to gym work or organized runs. Little things help like parking as far away as you can from the supermarket. It's amazing how many of us pay $50 a month for a gym membership, but then drive around the parking lot looking for the absolute closest spot at the mall. When you enter a building, take the stairs and not the elevator. Walk to the park with your kids instead of driving.

Start eating low carbohydrate and low fat foods. Find things you like that are low in fat, you don't have to eat bland tasteless food just because your on a diet. Also, start taking a daily vitamin supplement, it will keep you alert and also make sure you are getting your essential nutrients that you might be missing out on.

Carry diet snack foods with you, you will be less likely to stop off at McDonalds or a vending machine if you have something with you.

Lastly, consult your medical practitioner for a weight loss program and exercise program and  that is right for you.

The temporary and modest weight losses with commercial diet programs are not a surprise, according to Dr. Wadden, because no one knows how to achieve permanent weight loss.
