Athletic Scholarships.

Play safe. an injury could kill that scholarship dream

As a high school athlete you take your sport seriously and have your goal of an athletic scholarship uppermost in your mind. Your sport could be your ticket to help pay for college. Every high school athlete knows that in a matter of seconds the dream could end. Nothing kills a college athletic career faster than an injury.

But we’ve all heard the phrase “tough it out”. So you’re torn between protecting yourself and being accused of babying your injury.

In a perfect world your coach would immediately recognize the need for you to properly treat your injury, but we all know that doesn’t always happen. So the responsibility is all on you. Only you know if you can “walk it off” or need to spend some time on the bench.

Of course, if you take the proper precautions you can avoid the threat of injury to a certain extent:

  • Focus on developing strength and endurance, as well as cardiovascular fitness and flexibility. All will benefit you.

  • Wear the appropriate protective equipment. Make sure it fits properly and wear it – even during practices.

  • Keep yourself hydrated during practices and events.
  • Practice good nutrition. Eating carbohydrates (pasta, potatoes, rice and breads) the night before an event will help provide your muscles with glycogen, the energy chemical utilized by your muscles.

  • Stretch before and after practices and events.

  • Warm-up for 15 minutes before any event and 5 minutes when you’ve been sitting, such as during halftime.
  • If you feel any muscle strain or even just have a feeling that something isn’t right – talk to your athletic trainer. Their job is the prevention of injury as well as the treatment of injury.

Of course, there are some instances when it is impossible to prevent an injury. But if you follow the precautions listed above you have a better chance of avoiding injury and continuing to play the sport you love.

Unfortunately most athletes don’t even realize when they’ve suffered from a concussion. There can be serious results if the brain isn’t given the chance to heal properly following a concussion and it receives another injury.

Your a high school athlete and you love to compete and you’re looking forward to playing your sport in college. But remember this, your there to get a degree, in the long run that's what is important.
