A SHORT HISTORY OF ICE SKATING

Ice skating, is a sport in which participants wear steel-bladed skates and slide around on outdoor or indoor ice rinks. The sport of ice skating originated in the Netherlands and Scotland and was brought to the United states by Scottish immigrants in the1700s.

Ice-skating is a very old means of transportation that originated from the need to travel across frozen lakes during winter. The earliest evidence available of the existence of ice-skating was found when a pair of skates were retrieved from the bottom of a lake in Switzerland. These skates dated back to about Three thousand years before the birth of Christ. The first ice skates were made from honed animal bone and attached to the feet with leather straps. The Dutch word for skates means 'leg bone'

The use of iron blades on ice-skates goes back to 1250 in Holland. During the early 1500's, the Dutch invented the double edge iron blade that enabled the wearer to propel forward without the use of poles. This is known as the Dutch roll.

During the 1600’s and 1700's, ice-skating became a popular winter sport amongst Europeans. It was a sport that was participated in by peasants as well as the aristocrats of all ages.

By the year of 1642, Scotland had organized the first ice-skating club in its capital, Edinburgh. As the popularity of the sport grew, the need for organized competition arose. The first documented  ice-skating competition was held in East Anglia, England on February 4, 1763. It was a speed skating event that consisted of a Fifteen mile race on the frozen canals.

The invention of the steel-bladed skate to replace those made of iron paved the way for international competitions. Today, women and men's speed skating and figure skating are also popular events in the Winter Olympics Games.

International ice skating competitions are governed by the International Skating Union (ISU), The World Championships, held each year, are among the most prestigious of international competitions. The Winter Olympic, which began in 1924, are held every 4 years in a city with a cold climate. Competitors for these events are chosen from the best skaters in each participating nation, usually through preliminary national competitions. Speed skaters also compete on a World Cup circuit.

There are plenty of ice hockey camps held every year throughout the USA. Camps usually offer Intense training in power and speed skating, coaching in the fundamentals of defense-offense transition and development of skills in stick-handling, shooting and scoring and team play.
