The Historical origins of Wrestling

 

Facts and Information

Wrestling has always been a very popular sport throughout recorded history. The origins of wrestling can be traced back 15,000 years through cave drawings in France. Babylonian and Egyptian relief's show wrestlers using most of the holds known to the present-day sport.

In ancient Greece, wrestling occupied a prominent place in legend and literature; wrestling competition, brutal in many aspects, was the number one sport of the Olympic Games. The ancient Romans borrowed heavily from Greek wrestling, but eliminated much of its brutality.

During the Middle Ages (fifth century to fifteenth century) wrestling remained popular and enjoyed the patronage of many royal families, including those of France, Japan, and England.

Early Americans brought a strong wrestling tradition with them when they came from England. The settlers also found wrestling to be popular among Native Americans.

  Amateur wrestling flourished throughout the early years of the country and served as a popular activity at country fairs, holiday celebrations, and in military exercises.

The 1st organized national wrestling tournament was held in New York City in 1888, while the 1st wrestling competition in the modern Olympic Games was held in 1904 in Saint Louis, Missouri. FILA was founded in 1912, in Antwerp, Belgium. The 1st NCAA Wrestling Championships were also held in 1912, in Ames, Iowa. USA Wrestling, located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, became the national governing body of amateur wrestling in 1983. It conducts competitions for all age levels.

wrestling was also part of the 1st modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, with the inclusion of a competition in the Greco-roman style without any weight category specifications. There followed a short period when this sport was excluded.

In college and high school wrestling, a wrestler must not only tilt the opponent's back toward the mat, breaking a forty-five° angle, but also hold the back in this position to earn points.

In 1908 Greco-roman wrestling was reinstated as an Olympic sport, free style was added to the Olympic Games in 1904.

In September 2001 the International Olympic Committee took the following 2 decisions on Wrestling:

1.Women’s Wrestling was included in the Olympic Games 2004 competition program, in 4 weight categories for the free style

2.The Reduction of the weight categories for men from sixteen to fourteen, in both Greco-roman and free style.

College-style wrestling, sometimes also known as scholastic or folk-style wrestling, is a form of wrestling that is native to the USA.

The 2 basic styles of amateur wrestling are Greco-Roman and freestyle. Other forms of wrestling are common within different cultures.

A junior wrestler sustained a serious head injury last week while participating in a high school wrestling match in Dallas, Texas.

So for the past 2 to 3 quarters I spent long hours in the hot, thick-aired wrestling room conditioning non-stop with my female coach, Natalia. My parents told my coach to bring her in since they still did not want me to wrestle guys, especially after I passed out the first time I attempted to wrestle a guy.

My appetite for challenges grew. I soon found myself looking for an intellectual test. This led me to the Social Science Research program and my Intel Project. Since wrestling had such a profound effect on my character, I wondered if sports could have a similar effect on others.

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The PSAC was formed in 1951 for the purpose of administering and promoting men’s athletic programs within the fourteen state teachers colleges in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
