He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). He used the net from tennis, and raised it six feet six inches
above the floor, just above the average man's head.
During a demonstration game, someone said to Morgan that the players seemed
to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps
"volleyball" would be a more apt name for the sport.
On July 7, 1896< at Springfield College the 1st game of "volleyball"
was played.
BASIC RULES OF VOLLEYBALL
SERVING
- The server must serve from behind the end
line until after contact.
- The ball can be served overhand or
underhand.
- The ball must be clearly visible to
opponents before the serve is made.

- The served ball may graze the net and drop
to the other side for point.
- The 1st game serve is determined by a
volley, each subsequent game shall be served by the loser of the previous
game
- The serve must be returned by a bump only.
No setting or attacking a serve.
Scoring
- Rally scoring will be used.
- There will be a point scored on every score of the ball.
- Offense will score on a defense miss or out of bounds hit.
- Defense will score on an offensive miss, out of bounds hit, or serve
into the net.
- Game will be played to Twenty five points.
- Must win by two points.
Rotation
- Teams will rotate every time they win the serve.
- Players shall rotate in a clockwise manner.
- There shall be Four to Six players on each side.

Volleyball was invented in
1895 by William Morgan
at the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) in Holyoke, Mass., where
he worked as Director of Physical Education.
Men's volleyball is classed as an equivalency sport but women's
volleyball is classed by the NCAA as a head count sport.
