Tug of War

The History of tug of war

THE ORIGINS OF TUG OF WAR

For 1000's of years men have enjoyed testing each other's strength according to the simple principles adopted for the sport of tug of war.

In ancient Egypt, teams of 3 men would hold each other around the waist and try to pull the opposing team over a line marked on the ground.

This sport, with or without the rope was adopted by many civilizations and became part of their culture such as Burma (Myanmar), India, Indonesia, Hawaii, Congo, Korea, New Guinea and New Zealand.

Tug of war was practiced in ancient Greece both as a competition sport and as a physical exercise to help train athletes for other sports.  At the courts of the Chinese emperors, around 1200 A.D., teams specifically trained for tug of war competed against each other in tournaments.  In the 1500's, tug of war matches were often held in Scandinavia and later spread into Western Europe.

In England, the 1st tug-of-war match took place in the 1600's, between 2 Norfolk villages. It's generally believed, though, that the modern competitive sport first started at sea sea, specifically with the famous Cutty Sark. Richard Woodget, her captain from 1885 to 1895, used the tug-of-war to help keep his crew fit.

Tug of war became an organized sport at the end of the 19th century when organized clubs were formed. When Baron Pierre de Coubertin revived the Olympic Games, tug of war was featured on the program of the Paris Olympic Games in 1900.

International rules then became necessary.  Theses rules still exist today having undergone very little modification.  After the 1920 Games, the International Olympic Committee reduced the competition program and tug of war's was eliminated.
As tug of war was no longer on the Olympic Program, national gymnastic and athletic associations were not very interested in tug of war as a discipline.  The tug of war teams, at that time, felt that they had to establish their own stand alone association.  The 1st association was formed in Sweden in 1933.  Other nations soon followed including the United Kingdom in 1958 and the Netherlands in 1959.
Tug of war is primarily a team sport. Teams consist of 8 athletes. They are categorized according to the total weight of the team. There are 6 male divisions and 2 female divisions. as well as a male youth division for the ages of Fifteen to Eighteen.  The female competition was 1st organized at the World Championships in 1986.
