HOW PAINTBALL WAS INVENTED

The very 1st game of paintball was played in July of 1981 in New Hampshire with a group of 12 participants playing “Capture the Flag” in the woods. The players used guns that had been developed by Crossman in 1970 that were used for marking difficult to reach trees and cattle.

In 1985 the 1st actual paintball gun was designed and in 1987 the current “paintball recipe” was established and patented by George A Skogg. This recipe consists of a gelatin capsule filled with a biodegradable water soluble and non-toxic mix of color. This was found to be an effective marker because it would easily wash out with water and detergent. This also meant that is usually did not stain clothing.

Paintball quickly began turning itself into a business and the 1st paintball field opened in 1982 in Rochester, New York and the same person opened the 1st indoor field in 1984 in Buffalo, New York. Australia embraced paintball in 1982 and the UK quickly followed suit in 1985.

By 1991 many European countries contained paintball fields also. The initial attraction of paintball was the flexibility of playing outdoors or indoors and the seemingly endless different style of games that could be played.

Paintball has now become the 4th largest alternative sport in the United states surpassing snowboarding. In 2002 over 8,700,000 people played paintball at least once each spending on average $44 per experience. Since paintball is not a contact sport, it caters for for anyone of any age or sex to be able to play together or against one another.

Because of this, paintball is  now played in over One hundred and four countries. Paintball has also proven to be one of the safest sports that you can play statistically with the least number of injuries per 1,000 participants at 0.2. Paintball is therefore safer than running or golf for example.

Paintball can be played either outside in the woods, an open field with bunkers or indoors on a field with bunkers. All possible playing locations need to be safely away from people who are not involved in the action for obvious reasons. The open area fields have tall netting surrounding the field to protect any and all spectators.
