In East Asia kite flying is an ancient and well known custom enjoyed by many. Asian kites are also musical. Wind passes through the bamboo tubes or reeds of the kites producing a whistling sound that many believe frightens away evil spirits.

The people of Korea fly kites during the 1st days of the New Year. In China the 9th day of the 9th month is Kites' Day, or the Festival for Climbing Heights, this is a holiday honoring kites. Japanese and Chinese kites are very brightly colored and have elaborate decorations. They may have the shapes of birds, butterflies, insects or different geometric forms. A favorite Chinese fancy kite is the dragon, a ferocious-looking head kite with many smaller flat body kites strung behind on parallel tie lines.

Kite flying is very popular in Thailand, where the air always seems to be filled with a wonderful variety of kites during the springtime. Kite fighting is a major league sport in Thailand. The all Thailand championships are held in Bangkok each spring.

   In the Thai form of kite fighting, each of the 2 contending teams try to bring the other team's kite. The diamond shaped pakpao is flown by 1 team, the star-shaped chula by the opposing team. The superior speed and maneuverability of the smaller pakpaos often allows them to defeat the larger chulas.

In ancient times kites were used to carry lines across rivers, streams or gorges as the 1st step in the bridge building process. History tells us that a Korean general once hung a lantern from a kite as an inspiring signal his troops. In 1752 Benjamin Franklin drew electricity from a storm cloud with a kite and a key, demonstrating the electrical nature of lightning.

 Aerial photography by kite also took place during the 1880s and was used extensively in the Spanish-American War. In the early 1900s the USA Weather Bureau measured temperature, wind velocity and humidity with kites carrying sensitive measuring instruments.

During WW II the USA used kites that could be made to move like enemy airplanes as targets for antiaircraft gunnery practice. Life rafts on ships carried kites that served as radio transmission aerials which saved many lives. The Germans also used human-carrying kites from submarines for observation purposes.
