Tournament Golf and Champions

The Professional Golfers' Association of America (PGA) was formed in 1916, fifteen years after the 1st Professional Golfers' Association was founded in Great Britain.

It conducts the PGA and PGA Senior tournaments and Ryder Cup competition between members of the American and British PGAs.

The governing body of golf in the United States is the United States Golf Association (USGA), founded in 1894. This organization, with headquarters in Far Hills, New Jersey, rules on ball and club specifications and other such regulations such as hazards and scoring. It liaises with the Royal and Ancient Club of St. Andrews when reviewing international rules.


Both amateurs and professionals compete in open golf tournaments. Among major tournaments that have the support of the PGA are the United States Open, United States Women's Open, PGA, Masters, British Amateur, British Open ,
Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), Canadian Open, and United States Amateur and United States Women's Amateur.

Tournament golf first became well established as a spectator sport in the USA during the 1920s.

In 1981, the name of the professional golf circuit was officially changed to the Tournament Players Association (TPA) Tour.

Such colorful professionals as Gene Sarazen, Walter Hagen,  and Tommy Armour have all added a lot to golf's popularity and public image. One of the most outstanding early amateurs was Robert T. Jones, Jr., of Atlanta, Ga., who between 1923 and 1930 won five USA Amateurs, four USA Opens, 3 British Opens, and a British Amateur 4of these in 1930 for an unprecedented Grand Slam.

Golf became firmly established in Great Britain by the Seventeenth century. In the 1800s the gutta perched ball replaced the feather filled ball.  In 1860 the 1st British Open was played. The 1st permanent golf club in North America, Canada's Royal Montreal Club, was founded in 1873.

The Big 12 Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association is one of the most successful conferences in the NCAA. the league has been established for twelve years.

Curling was a demonstration sport at the 1924, 1932, 1988 and 1992 Olympic Winter Games, and enjoyed full-medal status for the 1st time at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games at (Karuizawa) Nagano, Japan.
