THE HISTORY OF CURLING

The 1st actual evidence about the sport of curling was found in Scotland in the Sixteenth century. In Canada after the fall of Quebec City in 1759, Scottish soldiers had time on their hands and melted down cannon balls to form kettle-shaped irons so they could enjoy their favorite pastime on the frozen St. Charles River.

The earliest equipment used by practitioners of the sport included curling stones that had been formed by nature -- each one different and quite unique. When players would slide the rocks around they often curved, or curled, as they moved across the ice, hence the name "curling". Brooms were used to clear or sweep the snow from the path of the stones. The 1st organized curling club was established in Lochleven Scotland in 1668. The Royal Caledonian Curling Club was founded in 1836 and from this came the first governing body of the sport which eventually led to the introduction of uniform rules and regulations throughout Scotland and later worldwide.

Scottish settlers all across Canada formed curling clubs and by the 1920s the growth of the sport in Canada had far exceeded its development in any other country. Today, more than one and a half million Canadians enjoy the sport.

Curling was a demonstration sport at the 1924, 1932, 1988 and 1992 Olympic Winter Games, and enjoyed full-medal status for the 1st time at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games at (Karuizawa) Nagano, Japan.
