Helmets for skiers

Injury protection In The Snow

Downhill Skiing has became a much faster sport than it used to be, and snowboarding, of course, just continues to increase in popularity. According to the Canadian Ski Council, in 2004 about 3.8 million Canadians aged twelve and over took part in some form of skiing, (cross country or alpine), snowboarding or a combination of those sports.

More and more skiers and snowboarders realize the need to protect themselves by wearing a helmet. It was once quite rare to see people wearing protective helmets on the slopes. A Vermont survey found that approximately 1/3 of skiers and snowboarders wore helmets on the slopes in the 2004-2005 season.

A study of skiers treated for head injuries at a Colorado trauma centre in the October 2002 issue of The Journal of Trauma discovered that collisions with trees were the most common cause of severe and fatal injuries. Snowboarders were found to be 3 times more likely to suffer a head injury than skiers.

Blows to the head are among the most lethal and devastating types of injury. Although head injuries are not that common, an estimated sixty percent of skiing fatalities involve some sort of head injury. Even if it is not fatal such an injury can have lifelong effects.

A Norwegian study published in February 2006 in the Journal of the American Medical Association discovered that the use of a helmet reduced the risk of head injury by 60%.

Helmets for Young and Old

A five-year-old girl, who was not wearing a helmet, was killed when skiing and collided into a tree at Aspen, Colorado in the spring of 2001. One month later, a five-year old boy, wearing a helmet, had a similar crash in the same area and survived with concussion and a dented helmet.

The day after the 2nd accident, the Aspen Highlands Skiing Company ruled that all children 6 and under at its ski school must wear helmets. In the 2002-2003 season this regulation was extended to children up to the age of twelve. In September 2002, the National Ski Areas Association launched its Lids On Kids Web site to promote ski helmets and ski safety education.

Physical conditioning is probably one of the most important things an athlete should do prior to the start of the season in order to decrease the chances of an injury, particularly the soreness that occurs during the first few days of practices.
