Injury protection and how football helmets work

At the halfway mark of another heart-stopping NFL season, player injuries have included everything from minor scratches, scrapes, and bruises to major strains, sprains, and pulls.

Fortunately severe head injuries are very rare in the NFL, even though players take a beating every Sunday afternoon for sixteen weeks—including blows to the head powerful enough to move the fillings in your teeth.

Protective safety helmets save players from major head injury—but did you know that helmets vary widely by sport?

“The different designs represent trade-offs,” Shealy explains. “Suspension system type helmets prevent football (and hockey) helmets from having to be replaced frequently during a game because of repeated hits. But they’re not as good as a sacrificial design for a severe hit where the inner liner crushes and fragments.” Shealy emphasizes that “sacrificial” refers to the helmet, not the wearer.

“Football helmets use a suspension system designed to take repeated hits, whereas helmets for biking, skiing and motor sports use a ‘sacrificial’ design intended for 1-time hits,” says Jasper Shealy, world-renowned expert on sports helmet use and professor emeritus of industrial and systems engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Now, the next time you’re sitting around the television watching the big game, impress your buddies with your newfound knowledge of helmets. And, appreciate the big hits even more, knowing that helmets and other protective gear make them bearable.

“While this year’s USA Football National Convention on Amateur and Youth Football is geared firstly toward the youth level of the game of football, I have hopes that they will someday see the importance of helping the adult amateur level of the game too”, said AFA President Ron Real.
