HARRIS STOWE STATE UNIVERSITY
sports information AND COLLEGE HISTORY Harris-Stowe State University can trace it's origins back to 1857 when it was founded by the St. Louis Public Schools as a normal school and then became the 1st public teacher education college west of the Mississippi River and the 12th such institution in the USA.
Harris-Stowe State University began offering in-service education for white teachers from St. Louis as far back as 1906. In 1920, Harris Teachers College became a 4 year undergraduate college authorized to grant a Bachelor of Arts in Education Degree. In 1924 the institution received accreditation from the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges. Accreditation from other agencies soon followed, including accreditation by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. On Aug. 25, 2005, by mandate of the State of Missouri, Harris-Stowe State College received University status. Today the university hosts collaborative graduate degree programs jointly with the University of Missouri, St. Louis. |

The college continues to expand, adding new campuses and buildings as part of its Twenty-First century initiative to offer opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students looking for a variety of degree programs. Harris-Stowe State University is dedicated to the pursuit of learning, which doesn't always take place in a traditional classroom. The Emerson Physical Education and Performing Arts Building opened it's doors in 2004 to allow our students to engage in the complete college experience. The ever expanding athletics program found its home in and around the Emerson Building with its new training facilities, basketball court, and an adjacent soccer ground. The college is a member institution of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. |

College Bound by Jamie Yaniga Ever since eighth grade softball has been a big part of my life. It was hard at first because usually in order to go far in such a competitive sport one needs to start out at an early age. Like my sister, she started at the age of five and now plays Division I softball for George Washington University.
Tug of war became an organized sport at the end of the 19th century when organized clubs were formed. When Baron Pierre de Coubertin revived the Olympic Games, tug of war was featured on the programme of the Paris Olympic Games in 1900.
Paintball has been played in many different ways in many different places. It is a sport where all types of people and budgets are able to play on an even playing field. Overall the game has grown and continues to grow at a great rate and shows no signs of slowing in the near future. Paintball is simply great fun.
