how to play football.

College Football Rules

American football or gridiron evolved from the English game of rugby. The game involves very little use of the feet as there is not much kicking involved in the game unlike soccer which is known internationally as " football".

Playing Field

The field is 160 feet wide and 100 yards long. The center of the field is the fifty yard line. The lines are marked every ten yards in both directions from the fifty yard line.  Each team owns 1/2 of the field (teams change ends after every fifteen minutes of playing time. The 2 forty yard lines are distinguished by who owns them. The "zero yard line" is called the goal line. The areas to either side of those one hundred yards, extending ten yards past the goal lines, are called the end zones. Each team tries to get the ball past the opponent's goal line and into the end zone to score a touchdown. At far edge of each end zone are the goal posts which, together with the cross bar form a big H. These are used only when a team decides to try to kick a field goal instead of going for a touchdown or to kick for an extra point after scoring a touchdown. To score the field goal or extra point, the ball must go between the vertical posts and over the bar.

The field, going across, is divided into 3 parts, center, left and right distinguished by hash marks, which are sixty feet from each side line. Normally, for each play, the ball starts where it ended up at the end of the previous play. However, if the ball ends up outside of the center part of the field, it is brought back to the nearest hash marks so plays do not start at the extreme sides of the field. The area to either side of the field is out-of-bounds.

Kickoffs: At the beginning of the game a coin is tossed to see which team receives the ball first. The team that controls the ball is the offense; the other team is the defense. Game duration is one hour, but it takes approximately 3 hours to play because the clock is often stopped for various reasons.

The game is divided into fifteen minute quarters with a major break at the thirty minute mark and is called half time.. At the end of the 1st and 3rd quarters, the players simply change sides. The ball is moved to the corresponding point on the opposite side of the field, and play then continues. The players leave the field for twenty minutes at half-time. After half-time, play does not continue where it ended. Instead, the team that originally lost the coin toss gets possession of the the ball 1st.

My Frightening Experience  It was Friday night, I didn’t have a football game that night because it was our bye week, but the coach had asked some of use to go watch the Shepherd and Woodville game. It was important to go because we played Woodville next week and Shepherd was our first district game. I don’t remember much of the game other than Woodville won by a lot, but what would happen after the game I will never forget.
