YOUTH FITNESS PROGRAMS PROMOTE HEALTHY HABITS FOR LIFE

Health and fitness pros. are asked to get involved and promote youth activity.

After school and other structured youth training programs quite often lack the amounts of physical activity needed by young people, even those offered at health and fitness facilities.

A youth fitness expert speaking at the American College of Sports Medicine’s eighth annual Health & Fitness Summit & Exposition urged health and fitness professionals to incorporate more physical activity in the lives of the young people they interact with.

"We have the opportunity each day to positively impact on the health and wellbeing of millions of youngsters,” said Michael Spezzano, an ACSM member and Health and Fitness Specialty Consultant for the YMCA of the United States of America. “We need to engage these children, to lead them through fun, varied and age-appropriate activities so they will learn to live healthy for the long-term.”

"Catering to adults has been the norm in the health and fitness industry for many years,” said Spezzano. “Most program directors and health and fitness pros. were only trained to work with adults. We need to attract professionals skilled at working with young people or re-train existing staff to understand their unique personal and health and fitness needs.”

Spezzano said that the YMCA has succeeded at developing more activity-based programs for young people and provided examples. He encourages health and  fitness centers and clubs to evaluate which programs would work in their unique settings.

"Many of the same factors that contribute to youth obesity – such as environmental and safety concerns – are leading children out of their backyards and playgrounds and into our facilities,” added Spezzano.

“The responsible thing to do is to provide these young people with the chance they need to be healthy and happy through physical activity.”
