One of the oldest competitive sports known to man is field hockey which can be traced back to well before the Ancient Greek Olympic Games.

We are not sure as to the exact origins of field hockey but drawings found in the tomb at Beni-Hasen in the Nile Valley of Egypt depicted men playing the sport, these drawings are believed to be over 4000 years old. 

Modern field hockey began in England in the middle of the 19th century. The 1st men’s hockey club was formed in 1849(Blackheath). The Hockey Association was formed in London in 1886. The British army introduced field hockey to India and other British colonies which led to the 1st International hockey competition in 1895.

Hockey was introduced as a medal sport at the 1908 London Olympic Games and again in 1920 at the games in Antwerp. The sport was again played on the Olympic program at Amsterdam in 1928 and has been an Olympic sport since that time. Women's hockey became a medal sport on the Olympic Games program in Moscow in 1980.

In 1887, the 1st women’s hockey club was formed in East Mosley, England, and was quickly followed up by the establishment of the All England Women’s Hockey Association in 1889.  In 1901 English physical education instructor Constance Applebee introduced the sport to the United States after attending a seminar at Harvard.

Applebee borrowed a ball and some sticks and held the 1st field hockey exhibition in the USA behind the Harvard gymnasium. The game was received enthusiastically and the sport quickly spread to some of the region's most prestigious women's schools.


By the early 1920’s, a number of clubs and colleges supported field hockey teams for women. The United States women’s touring field hockey team took part in its 1st international tournament in 1920, and 2 years later the U.S. Field Hockey Association was formed with the aim of promoting and generating enthusiasm for the sport.

In 1975, the United States took part in the 1st I.F.W.H.A. World Championship of women's hockey in Edinburgh, Scotland, placing tenth , and 5 years later a U.S. team was invited to participate in the !st women's Olympic Games tournament in Moscow. The United States boycott of the 1980  Moscow Games prevented the team from competing. The USA captured the bronze medal 4 years later under legendary coach Vonnie Gros, at the 1984 L.A. Olympic Games. The team would continue its Olympic tradition with appearances in Seoul in 1988 and Atlanta in 1996.

 

Field hockey camps stress both individual skills and team play with each participant. You get instruction in the latest stick-work techniques, scoring and shooting drills, team defense and attack tactics, goalkeeper training as well as taking part in small sided games and full field play.

Olympic Field Hockey Olympic Games Field Hockey consists of twelve women's teams and twelve men's teams. (The number of women's teams was increased from ten teams to twelve in 2005 for the 2008 Olympic Games). In 1998, former International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch announced a commitment to the sport when he stated that hockey will always have a place in the Olympic Games.

The game of field hockey is played by many people all over the world. Historically it is one of the oldest sports and the "2nd largest team sport in the world". Hockey is a sport which requires a person to have a lot of speed, skill and endurance.

Water Polo camps offer both tactical and technical training. Tactical training usually includes Attacking multiple defensive schemes, Anticipation, Decision Making and Defending multiple offensive schemes.
