Field Hockey pre-dates the Ancient Olympic Games by about 1200 years but it did not become a games sport until the 1908 London Games.

Field Hockey returned to the Olympic Games in 1920 and again in 1928, and has been an Olympic sport since that time. India was the dominant  field hockey nation at the Games when it won thirty consecutive games and 6 gold medals from 1928 to 1956. The U.S.A. men's team have competed in 6 Olympic Games,(1932, 1936, 1948, 1956, 1984 and 1996), and won a bronze medal in the 3 team, 1932 games.

Women's field hockey 1st showcased at the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980. The Netherlands women have won the most medals with 3, including a gold medal in 1984, while the Australian women have taken out the most gold medals after winning the 1988 and 1996 Olympic matches. The U.S. women qualified for the Olympic Games in 1980, 1984, 1988 and 1996, and won the bronze medal in 1984.

QUALIFIERS

Olympic Games Field Hockey consists of twelve women's teams and twelve men's teams. (The number of women's teams was increased from ten teams to twelve in 2005 for the 2008 Olympic Games). In 1998, former International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch announced a commitment to the sport when he stated that hockey will always have a place in the Olympic Games.

The host country is an automatic qualifier. Other teams qualify for the Games through continental championships and qualifying tournaments. The Pan American Games serve as the continental championships for teams in the Caribbean and Americas.

United States Field Hockey History Modern field hockey began in England in the middle of the 19th century. The 1st men’s hockey club was formed in 1849(Blackheath). The Hockey Association was formed in London in 1886. The British army introduced field hockey to India and other British colonies which led to the 1st International hockey competition in 1895.

Field hockey camps stress both individual skills and team play with each participant. You get instruction in the latest stick-work techniques, scoring and shooting drills, team defense and attack tactics, goalkeeper training as well as taking part in small sided games and full field play.

Men’s Field Hockey started in the U.S.A. with the 1st official game between the Germantown Cricket Club (near Philadelphia) and the Westchester Field Hockey Club (Rye New York) in 1928.

The game of field hockey is played by many people all over the world. Historically it is one of the oldest sports and the "2nd largest team sport in the world". Hockey is a sport which requires a person to have a lot of speed, skill and endurance.

 

Paintball has now become the 4th largest alternative sport in the United states surpassing snowboarding. In 2002 over 8,700,000 people played paintball at least once.

 Field Hockey by Esnart Chipili.  Field Hockey is a popular sport for men and women of all ages and it’s one of the sports that you have to play with passion and joy. It’s a sport that brings friends and families together because it’s all about team work and love for one another.

A college education is not cheap, attending college costs a lot of money. Very few of us have that kind of cash lying around, and not all student-athletes receive full scholarships.
