EATING DISORDERS IN STUDENT ATHLETES

BULIMIA AND ANOREXIA COLLEGE ATHLETES

Most people think that eating disorders are issues for female super models and actresses. The truth is that eating disorders can strike both males and females; athletes who need to maintain a certain weight to compete can also fall victim to eating disorders.

Student athletes are encouraged to eat to maintain energy to train and compete, but they also work to keep their weight down to perform at their highest level. Wrestlers, in particular, strive to maintain a consistent weight to keep within their competitive weight brackets.

Reports from the NCAA indicate that many of its members reported at least one case of anorexia or bulimia in their athletic programs.

Eating disorders are many times an expression of underlying emotional distress that may develop long before an individual becomes involved in athletics. Stress from athletic competition, academic challenges or social relationships may trigger psychological conditions such as eating disorders. Something as simple as offhand remarks about a person’s appearance or badgering about their body type can set eating disorders in motion.

The most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Anorexia nervosa is a self-imposed starvation in an obsessive effort to lost weight and become thin. The warning signs of anorexia nervosa include drastic weight loss, preoccupation with food-calories-weight, wearing baggy or layered clothing, excessive exercise, mood swings and avoiding food-related social events.

Bulimia is binge eating followed by purging and excessive exercise. The warning signs include excessive weight concern, lavatory visits after meals, depression, strict dieting following eating binges and criticism of one’s body.

It’s important to note that the presence of one or two of these warning signs does not mean the presence of an eating disorder. Only a doctor or other healthcare professional can make a definitive diagnosis.

College dining halls provide a lot of food choices in a new eating environment. Healthy eating does not have to be hard. You just need to keep these general nutrition principles in mind.

Researchers have isolated a new gene that regulates human feeding behavior and body weight.
