Clemson University is a public, land-grant, coeducational, research university situated in Clemson, South Carolina.

The school was founded in 1889 based on a legacy from Thomas Green Clemson, who willed his Fort Hill plantation home, its surrounding forest and farmlands and other property to the state of South Carolina to establish a scientific and technical college for South Carolina. the institution opened its doors in 1893 as a military college. There were 446 students.

The Carnegie Foundation has classed the university as a Doctoral/Research University-Extensive, a category which comprises less than 4% of all universities in the USA. Students have a choice of more than eighty undergraduate and one hundred graduate degree programs in 5 colleges: Agriculture, Architecture, Forestry and Life Sciences; Arts and Humanities; Engineering and Science; Business and Public Affairs; Health, Education and Human Development.
