CARLOW UNIVERSITY

History and sports information

When the Sisters of Mercy arrived in Pittsburgh from Carlow, Ireland, in 1843, they came with a simple yet boundless mission: to serve the poor, the sick, and the uneducated. They established a number of schools and orphanages, as well as the Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh.

In 1876, Ursuline Sisters from France, wanting to open an academy for girls, bought the beautiful chateau situated on "the Green" of the present Carlow University campus. In 1894, the sisters sold the chateau and its Thirteen acres of grounds to the Sisters of Mercy through Bishop Phelan of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Shortly after the chateau burned to the ground. The present motherhouse for the Sisters of Mercy was opened in 1909.

Today, Carlow is identified for its academic excellence. Carlow's curriculum celebrates the ideals of a liberal arts education while offering solid career preparation.
