ALL ABOUT POKER

A SHORT HISTORY AND THE BASIC RULES OF POKER

There are as many different ideas put forward about the origins of Poker as there are variations of the game. The most plausible explanation is that the Chinese first invented the game around nine hundred A.D.

Another possibility is that the game originates from the Persian game "as nas". This is a five-player game, which requires an unusual  deck of twenty five cards with five suits. However, this is only recorded back to the 17th century.

Another theory calls on the French "poque". The French who settled New Orleans around 1480 played Poque, a card game involving betting and bluffing. This was stated to be the first use of a deck consisting of spades, diamonds, hearts and clubs.

Fragments of cards have been tentatively dated to twelfth or thirteenth century in Egypt. Some historians believe modern cards originated from the Indian card game of Ganjifa.

The origin of the word Poker is also well debated. Most of the dictionaries and historians of the game believe that it comes from an 18th-century French game, poque. However, there are other references to pochspiel, which is a German game. In pochspiel, there is an element of bluffing, where players would indicate whether they wanted to pass or open by rapping on the table and saying, "Ich Poche!" Some say it could have been derived from the Hindu word, pukka.

There are many different types or forms of Poker. Omaha, Stud and Texas Hold'em are very popular games and are played in casino's worldwide. These games  are played by between  2 and 10 players with a deck of 52 cards. The aim of the game is to collect the best hand from the pocket cards and the board cards.
